How to Pray

“Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples’”Luke 11:1

Have you ever been asked to pray for someone and you were like I don't know how to pray? If you serve within your local church and have been called upon to pray and you are like but I don't know how...

Feeling like you don’t know how to pray is very common. Don’t beat yourself up about it, just keep at it. In Luke 11:1, Jesus disciples even asked him how to pray. So you are in great company.

“Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples’” Luke 11:1

I use to feel just like that; I would intentionally try to not be in the view of the Pastor or someone of the likes. So they would not call on me to pray for everybody. I know it sounds very selfish... but I didn't think I knew how to pray because all those people I had heard praying before others. Had these eloquent prayers and they would say kind of the same thing and I hadn't had those things memorized and my prayers did not sound like that. So I didn't want to pray before others because I could not pray like them. So I thought I didn't know how to pray and that I shouldn't be up there praying for people in that way.

One Saturday afternoon, three years ago, I took this class with a Pastor and others in my team and he said you pray as the Holy Spirit leads you... which means if the Holy Spirit is leading you. You pray the words He gives you (what you feel in your spirit/in your heart to say) and nothing else or else it's just fluff and having no power.

If all you have is ‘Help me Lord.’ That’s enough. As believers who have the gift of speaking in tongues… you pray in the spirit. I did a blog about that here.

Pray as you are led in the spirit. While you pray, you can stand, kneel, walk or whatever. You don’t have to be in a certain position to pray and to be heard. Think about it not everyone is able to stand, to kneel or walk… but God still hears them when they pray and answers them. No matter what position you are in just relax, speak from  your heart and be yourself and He will hear you.

Sometimes you may find yourself in a very distracting place or scary situation – don’t be afraid to pray (call on the Lord Jesus) in those situations and He will answer.

The more you pray (speak  to God), the more you grow and if you grow those around you will grow. So don’t neglect the time in prayer. Keep doing it, being a Christian is not a walk in the park it’s something we have to continually work on. The more we work on developing who we are through prayer the better we become and the more God can use us to do great and mighty things for the Kingdom of God.
